Roman roads topic of latest Redditch History society talk

Redditch Editorial 5th Jul, 2024   0

REDDITCH History Society continues its season of local and national history talks with a presentation on Roman roads this Monday, July 8 at the Oasis Christian Centre.

This month’s guest speaker is Alan Godfrey, a volunteer at Alcester Roman Heritage Centre, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.

Alan’s interest in local history has led to his research of the town during Roman times and particularly the road system which ensured rapid communications throughout the Empire.

His talk ‘All Roads Lead to Rome’ will explain the innovative Roman construction methods and how the 2,000 miles of metalled roads in Britain fell into disrepair after the Romans left in the fifth century.

The audience will find out the nation had to wait until the 18th century before it regained the knowledge and technology to get them back to the same standard.

Following the presentation, the society is holding one of its occasional book sales to raise cash for the running of the club.

Redditch History Society meets at the Oasis Christian Centre from 2pm to 4pm on the second Monday of each month except August. Non-members are always welcome to talks which cost £4 per session. Refreshments are also available.
