A DESPERATE plea has gone out for a lollipop person to help children across the road at Ridgeway Academy.
The Astwood Bank school, which has some 500 pupils, has been without a crossing patrol officer for the busy Evesham Road for more than two years.
Now they are appealing for a public spirited person to fill the role – and get paid into the bargain.
Headteacher Mike Bennett said: “It is a very busy road and whilst there is a 30mph speed limit, the flow of traffic is busy and quick and heavy.”
He added that the county council had in the past been able to appoint a crossing patrol officer but for the last two years had been unable to fill the vacancy.
“Therefore the pupils have to cross the road without assistance outside the school. This has caused several near misses…parents are concerned and pupils are in danger,” he said.
A particular issue is that, while school-run traffic can make the road slow in one direction, frequently the other side is free flowing making judging the speed of cars and lorries difficult.
The school, which has grown from being a middle school to a secondary, operates from 8.25am to 3pm in the afternoon.
Anyone interested in help the academy and pupils should call the school on 01527 892867 for more details.
