Saving Lives - Redditch Lions prostate cancer testing day proves a success

A PROSTATE cancer testing day organised by Redditch Lions could potentially save the lives of 12 people.

The event, at Kings Norton Golf Course, saw 144 men undergo a simple PSA blood test which helps with the detection of the condition, now the biggest cancer killer of men in the country.

Of these eight came back red, or positive and four were amber, suggesting further investigation was needed.

Brian Rich, President of Redditch Lions, said it was all part of the work the big hearted group – of both men and women – do to help the wider community.

“They say one in eight men will, on average, will have some kind of brush with prostate cancer in their lifetime which is quite thought provoking,” he said.

“I can’t say it’s pleasing, but it’s gratifying that we have been able to detect a potential problem in these cases.”

The tests were paid for through typical Lions ingenuity; a keen angler in their ranks organised a series of competitions with the peg money going to fund the PSA day.

“I do think a lot of men aren’t that keen on going to see a doctor but going somewhere else with your mates is a good way to do it,” said Brian.

The Lions are also keen supporters of the Rory the Robot campaign to site a prostate and bladder robotic surgeon at the Alexandra Hospital.

“Itr comes together with us tackling both ends of the problem; first the early detection and prevention, then the curative side through Rory and the palliative side with Prostate Cancer UK,” said Brian.

Redditch Lions are also involved in numerous other campaigns, both locally and internationally, and next will be in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre on Friday, November 16 collecting money for the BBC Children in Need Appeal.
