WORK to renovate the outside of St Nicholas Church in Alcester is moving on apace.

The scaffolding has now been removed from the outside of the south-facing wall following replacement of the stones around the five main windows.

A fine cross has also been replaced on the south transept gable over the Lady Chapel, salvaged from a church in Blackheath in Sandwell.

Mike Newey, chairman of the restoration committee, said work would commence on the north side in August.

“Fund-raising is going well with us about £36,000 off the amount we need for the other side, which is very good,” he said.

He added that it was hoped all the work on the outside could be completed by the end of the year so that a start could be made on renovating the interior.
