School children inspire widow to carry on decorating Christmas tree

A WIDOW says school children inspired her to carry on decorating a tree in her driveway after her husband died.

Heathfield Road resident Finola Pearson, aged 75, decorated the tree every Christmas with her husband John.

But after he passed away five years ago, Finola decided to put an end to the tradition.

“The tree has always attracted large crowds of people but after losing John, for a long time, I couldn’t bring myself to do it,” she said.

“However as time went by I noticed just how many school children in Webheath walked past my house.

“It gave me hope – I still wasn’t feeling good but I decided to take a chance.”

The mother of two dusted off her old ladder, scaled the tree, and began decorating once again.

“It has given me a new lease of life and the chance to meet new people, including the children who take pictures with it.

“I love seeing them outside my home, it fills me with joy.”

Due to her age Finola has conceded that this year may be the last time she is able to decorate the tree.

“It takes a lot of effort and I don’t think I would be able to do it again on my own.

“The only way it could work is if someone was willing to help me.”

Finola added if she had the help, she might use the tree to raise money for charity in the future.
