School-run drivers in Redditch are causing concern

Redditch Editorial 16th Oct, 2017   0

DRIVERS in Redditch are being urged to clean up their act by a Redditch county councillor.

Coun Jane Potter (Con, Redditch South) listed speeding, parking on pavements, and parking across driveways when doing the school run among the issues raised by local residents.

“I’m always staggered at the way some people park illegally across driveways and then can use foul language when asked to move,” said Coun Potter.

“I’d like to see more parents walking their children to school, and with schools having catchment areas they should be able to do that, although I recognise that in some cases this could be difficult,” she said.

“Some schools have a walking bus, which is also a good idea and you’d be doing children an awful lot of favours for their health by letting them walk.”

She acknowledged that ticketing illegal parking around schools, while having a temporary impact, was only of limited use as once the traffic wardens moved on to other areas the problem quickly returned.

Also under consideration is a leaflet drop asking people to park more responsibly and not on the pavements to allow people with pushchairs, wheelchair users and those with other mobility issues to pass freely.

Local residents had also voiced concerns over the amount of speeding on Birchfield Road, particularly at the top end from Evesham Road.

“We’re look at getting a speed Vizor sign as these have been shown to help slow people down,” said Coun Potter.
