Schoolchildren stage protest to stop housing development

CHILDREN from Mappleborough Green CE Primary School have been protesting against the destruction of their local woodland for a housing development on land between Winyates Green and the A435.

The children, who are in year 5 and 6, have been working with the Heart of England forest for the past 4 years and have been learning about the importance of reforestation.

Consequently, when they learnt about their local woodland being destroyed, they felt strongly that this would devastate the wildlife.

Their teacher, Michelle Jones said: “I was keen to promote their ‘courageous advocacy’ and so we organised a visit to the site with the proposed plans to show them the trees and wildlife that would be destroyed.”

Michelle has also supported the children to write letters of complaint and then uploading them to the planning portal, and contacting local councillors.

She added: “The children have also created protest posters, written to all the parents to ask them to also write letters of objection and have contacted organisations such as the Woodland Trust to ask for their support.

“Their own letters have been sent to both Stratford District Council and Redditch Borough Council and they have been given their own section on the Stratford planning portal.”

The children are not the only residents who have opposed the plans, protesters gathered outside the Abbey Stadium on Monday, July 26 2021.

“I passionately believe that the children are the generation who need to save our planet and that environmental awareness is a crucial part of their education.”
