Search for perfect beat lands Redditch factory worker Pritt top film award

REDDITCH factory worker Pritt Kalsi has done it again – scooping ‘Best Documentary’ in the Birmingham Film Festival Awards.

Pritt’s film ‘Looking for the Perfect Beat’ came out top from among some 800 movies submitted for the UK-wide celebration.

The success of the Winyates resident follows on from his triumph earlier this year when he was named ‘Best Producer’ at the inaugural Birmingham Music Awards.

Back then only industry insiders knew of the talents of the UK-NSI worker but now Pritt, who’s spent a lifetime doing exactly what the title of his award winning film says, is making waves on both sides of the Atlantic.

“I’m ecstatic – this means more to me than the music award, to be honest,” said Pritt, who had two films shortlisted for the top award.

“Obviously I’ve had some help but I write the film, do the mixing, score the film, I’ve never had any sponsorship, pay for everything myself. It’s all down to a little bit of talent and an awful lot of hard work and persistence.”

His success is opening doors too. Last week he did a session with Nile Rodgers of Chic fame in The Beatles’ Abbey Road Studios in London, and he’s currently in negotiation with Netflix to bring Looking for the Perfect Beat to a wider audience.

“I go across to America a lot and the film is shot in New York because really, it’s the belly of the beast, the lion’s den,” said Pritt.

“I’m hoping what I’ve done will at least pay off the mortgage!”

It was the dance music of the early 80s that launched Pritt on his quest for that perfect beat.

“I was fascinated by it and wanted to be part of it, I was crazy for these records and went out to America and started working with the people who made them,” he said.

Since then Pritt’s worked with some of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry and his work features in videos for the vinyl-only album Power of Now.
