Severn Trent lane closure on Alders Drive in Redditch sparks anger

DRIVERS using Alders Drive in Redditch are facing at least 11 weeks of disruption as Severn Trent lays new water pipes.

The company says a one way system will be in operation for the duration of the work which isn’t expected to be completed until the end of March.

The operations, which started on Monday, January 8, have already caused major disruption to local bus services, businesses and commuters.

Jeremy Gittos, manager at Tyre City Redditch on Oxleasow Road which feeds into Alders Drive said customers were already fed up with the situation.

“This is is a three month project and this is a busy estate and the only way in now is from the Peugeot garage to the north.

“People are moaning already because of the disruption.

“My concern is we’ve a special half price tyre event on Friday and Saturday January 26-27 and last year we were absolutely rammed and I don’t want it to affect trade this time round.”

A resident from Winyates Green who relies on the buses to get around said they were already running late because of the disruption.

“Everyone, commuters, school runners, lorries, and buses trying to go up Alders Drive from the Warwick Highway island will have to go the long way round to access the lanes and roads off Alders Drive.

“It’s going to be chaos.”

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “We’ve started work replacing the water pipes on Alders Drive so we can reduce the risk of leaks and bursts causing disruptions to the local water supply.

“To keep our teams and other road users safe, we’ll be carrying out this work under a lane closure and we’re really sorry for the inconvenience this causes.

“This work is vital in ensuring the water supply is always there for our customers when they need it and our priority will be to complete this work and return everything back to normal as quickly, and as safely as possible.”

“We’ll be working on Alders Drive before moving onto Warwick Highway and we’re aiming for all work in the area to be completed by the end of March.”
