Sew important: Love of Scrubs drive to beat coronavirus threat

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to raise funds so scrubs can be made for NHS staff across the county.

The Worcestershire – For the Love of Scrubs page has already had £2,100 pledged in just a week.

As well as personal protective equipment (PPE), staff are also short of scrubs – the clothes worn under PPE in hospitals and around wards which can be changed, washed and ready to be worn again.

It has been reported some staff are spending shifts wearing uncomfortable paper scrubs.

The ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ team has an army of home volunteer dressmakers, professional seamstresses and others with sewing skills making the clothing.

Among them is 16-year-old Rebecca Palmer who was meant to be doing her GCSE textiles exams but instead has turned her skills to the scrubs cause.

The scrubs being made have formal approval from the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust but the suitable fabric does not come cheap and each set costs between £15 and £35.

Hospitals and wards have already put in more than 800 requests and the number is rising all the time.

The group is hoping residents will dig deep to raise as much cash as possible for the cause.

The For the Love of Scrubs drive was launched nationally by a nurse who saw the need for the clothing during the coronavirus crisis.

The Worcestershire one was started by Katie Powis and Sian Warran who realised a similar need for hospitals across Worcestershire.

They then appealed on Facebook for people with sewing skills to join them.
