SHROVE Tuesday panned out well in Alcester as adults and children alike raced along the market town’s street – frying pan firmly in hand.

Hundreds of people lined the High Street to cheer on family and friends taking part in the town’s annual pancake races on Tuesday (February 9).

Everyone from pre-school children to employees and landlords of the town’s pubs pounded the tarmac with a frying pan, complete with pancake, in hand in a bid to be crowned the winners.

All participants – even the adults – were given a lollipop on completing the race and those who managed to cross the finish line the fastest were rewarded with certificates and easter eggs from the High Bailiff at St Nicholas Church.

Alcester Nursery Studio, Polkadot Day Nursery and Teddy Bear Corner all had children win races during the Nursery runs while students from Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, St Nicholas’ C of E Primary School took home prizes alongside a number of home-schooled youngsters.

Beth Scott flipped her way to success, taking the ladies title alongside Jason Donnovan for the men in the mixed open race while the team from The Lord Nelson were crowned winners of the pub race.

The event was the 52nd of its kind organised by Alcester Court Leet and this year was sponsored by Simply Fresh and Sanders and Sanders Estate Agents.
