So proud: Mum's delight as son, 'Redditch born and bred' awarded BEM

A REDDITCH lad born and bred has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List.

PC Abdool Rohomon has spent 30 years as a police officer doing vital work with West Midlands Police serving the community.

His proud mum Sandra admitted she was just a little bit stunned when she heard the news.

“He told on December 28; he said, that seeing as he had all his family together we should sit down as he had some important news to tell us – well we were stunned – stunned and ecstatic, not just for us, but for the town too, it’s good news for Redditch.”

And Sandra admitted to being doubly proud for her husband, who passed award 13 years ago.

“There was just a tinge of sadness; he would have been so proud of him,” said Sandra.

Abdool was a pupil at what was then Abbey High School, now Trinity, going straight into the Police at the age of 18.

“He’s been happy as a police constable and what to stay there – he says he gets more out of it, it’s more hands on, which he enjoys,” said Sandra.

Married with a daughter he has two sons from a previous marriage.

“He knows the medal will be awarded at the Guild Hall in Worcester and then there will it will be down to Buckingham Palace, I presume in the summer,” said Sandra.

“And I would love it if his wife and three children could be there with him. He has made us all so proud.”
