Something active to do for little Redditch athletes

STUCK for something to do on a Saturday morning? A brand new sporting opportunity for intellectually challenged children in Redditch received its official launch recently, to the delight of mums, dads and the borough’s civic leaders.

The Young Athlete Programme (YAP) is the brainchild of Elaine Daykin of Redditch Special Olympics and is aimed at youngsters aged two to seven.

“I just thought we needed something for little ones – someone had said to me that there was nothing for them to do and I thought, ‘that was me 28 years ago’ and YAP is the result,” said Elaine.

The Saturday morning sessions put the emphasis on fun and teach children basic skills like running, hopping, kicking a ball and hand/eye co-ordination.

Even better, siblings can go along and enjoy themselves too.

“Come and have a look if you’re not sure,” said Elaine, who believes there are many more children out there who could benefit from YAP, “and if anyone would like to help fund us, please get in touch.”

Redditch Special Olympics celebrates its awards evening this Saturday (January 30) at Redditch Town Hall from 6.30pm and Elaine can be contacted on 01527 542831 or email: [email protected] .
