TAKE the prickle out of bonfire night this year and take time to check for hedgehogs nesting in piles of wood and kindling.
As bonfire night approaches, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) are urging people to save the lives of hundreds of hedgehogs by only building bonfires on the day they are to be lit.
If built bonfires are left unattended, for any length of time, they should be thoroughly checked for young children, hedgehogs and family pets, who may be hiding or playing in the pile, before lighting.
Lighting bonfires from just one side also gives creatures a fighting chance to safely escape if they have been caught unawares.
