THERE were cakes galore at the Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee morning at the Artists Workhouse in Studley.
The event, promoted by Studley Business Forum, was packed out and saw brisk trade from both coffee and cake sales and a popular raffle.
It also featured a ‘Bake Off’ competition with the onerous task of judging falling on the shoulders of district councillor for Studley & Sambourne Hazel Wright and Redditch Standard editor Ross Crawford.
Together they gamely munched their way through 15 cakes (including a shop-bought one they mistakenly thought was in the competition) before, with waistlines bulging, they came to a unanimous decision.
That was to choose the superb melt-in-the-mouth strawberry meringues of Saffy Marchant as the winner closely followed by the Earl Grey Tea fruit cake and Almond Sponge in second and third.
They also commended the lemon drizzle cake as beautifully fruity and lemony.
“It was very difficult to choose a winner because the standard of cakes was really very high but we decided on the meringues because they were something a little bit different from the cakes and absolutely delicious too. Our congratulations to all who took part and entered the competition,” said Coun Wright.
Sian Smith from Studley Business Forum who organised the event said: “It’s been really busy and how fantastic it is that the community has come together to give their support.
“A huge thank you to all who took part in the competition, to everyone who came along and contributed, to Dawn Harris for letting us use the Artist’s Workhouse and to Monsoon Estates Coffee Co of Atherstone on Stour for providing the coffee.”
Macmillan Cancer Support also benefited with a bumper £445.70 raised for the charity.
