REDDITCH Standard sports editor Liam Moakes and wife Alex received the perfect late Christmas gift with the birth of daughter Darcie – the first girl in more than 70 years to be born into the Moakes family.
Darcie Angela Joy Moakes, born at 3.01am on Saturday, December 29 at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, is the first girl to be born into the Moakes family since the mid-1940s.
Carol, niece of Liam’s grandfather Fred, and from Kings Norton, was the last.
Darcie, who weighed 6lb at birth and has been given middle names after Alex’s mum Angela and Liam’s nan Joy, has settled happily into her Sutton Coldfield home and has been busy meeting her grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and family friends in her first days.
Dad Liam said the family, based in and around Redditch, are thrilled: “Alex and I are overjoyed by Darcie’s arrival.
“Given the long history of boys being born into the family, most people, certainly myself, were expecting another boy, so it was a big surprise when we were handed Darcie in the delivery suite!
“However, we did have one or two friends who were adamant a girl was on the way and one even bought her a lovely pink outfit before she was born.
“My nan Joy was particularly convinced another boy was coming but that wasn’t the case and now, despite all the boys, we have the oldest and youngest members of the Moakes family with the girl connection in common. It’s very special.
“Her girl cousins are thrilled to have a new play friend but I’m sure the boys in the family will be just as involved in Darcie’s life and she’s going to have so much fun growing up.”
Mum Alex said: “I’m so proud of our daughter and thrilled she has been born into two special families.
“We will do all we can to ensure she is happy, healthy and a vibrant female member of the family!
“Darcie is a lucky girl, as are we her parents.”
