A MAJOR fundraising drive on behalf of the Royal British Legion was held at Redditch Central Mosque last Friday, in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.
Also taking part were West Mercia Police to highlight some of the opportunities for new recruits to the police and to offer community safety tips to local residents.
Mosque manager Raf Hussain said more than £200 was raised for this year’s poppy appeal from the event and said the two world wars had touched people of all cultures and faiths.
Writing in the wake of the Remembrance Sunday service he said: “I was honoured to lay a wreath in Remembrance of the millions who served of all faiths in both conflicts.
“They stood together, fought with honour and bravery as one and many gave their lives for all our freedoms.
“I would like to especially honour my dear father who like millions of other Muslims volunteered and fought in the front line in Burma, Malaya and Singapore and survived over three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
“They were known as the Forgotten Army.
“They will never be forgotten, but remembered always.”
