Step back in time as Alcester's Roman Museum gets set to open

Redditch Editorial 24th Aug, 2020   0

ALCESTER’S Roman Museum is to re-open to visitors following a five-month closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The museum will re-open on September 8, and will then open every Tuesday from 10.15 am to 3.45 pm, every Saturday afternoon from 1.15 pm to 3.45pm and on Heritage Open Day, which is Sunday, September 13 from 10 am until 4pm.

The museum is run by a volunteer-led independent charity, Alcester Heritage Trust.

The Trustees and volunteers are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to what has been described as ‘one of the hidden jewels of the Midlands’.

Chair of the Trust, Susan Juned said: “We have missed our visitors and are looking forward to welcoming them back to see the wealth of beautiful and fascinating artefacts that we have that show the Roman history of this historic town.”

The museum holds stunning treasures from Roman Alcester unearthed over the centuries.

“You cannot see anything of Roman Alcester above ground but there have been beautiful things found all from in and around the town and unless you knew the Romans were here you probably wouldn’t believe it,” said Susan.

“There are brooches, pottery, statues all of which have come from under the ground. It’s phenomenal.”

A visitor trail leaflet, designed for younger members of the public, will be available to take away as a guide to the museum and town.

Visitor numbers on-site will be limited to meet current social distancing guidelines.

Regular cleaning and clear signage will also help ensure both visitors and organisers stay safe and can enjoy a relaxing day out. For more information, visit: http://romanalcester.org/
