NEW Redditch MP Rachel Maclean kicked off her shoes and marked International Yoga Day at Redditch Library on Saturday.
She’d been invited to join a series of Sun Salutations – or Surya Namaskar – organised by by local resident Sujata Mathur who was aiming to achieve the longest ever cycle of Sun Salutations in Redditch.
The event had attracted beginners and experts alike, as well as Mrs Maclean, who delighted the assemby by revealing she had been practicing yoga for more than 23 years.
“Yoga is so good and you can take it anywhere – I’ve even been on a yoga retreat,” she said.
“It doesn’t cost you anything and it’s not just the physical benefits but the mental side too, just taking a few moments to empty your mind and concentrate on your breathing.”
Sun Salutations are billed as an excellent form of exercise comparing more than favourably with sports such as weightlifting, cycling, running and football.
If people fancy giving it a go, Sujata is launching a free yoga class at Oakenshaw community centre in Castleditch Lane from July 6 from 6pm to 7.30pm.

She is offering businesses the chance to do something good for their staff and for the wider community too.
Any firm that books a block of six sessions with Sarah this summer will earn on free session to donate to a charity or community group of their choice in Redditch.
