Strike action set for Redditch Post Office over pay dispute

Redditch Editorial 24th May, 2022   0

UNION members at Redditch Crown Post Office will take strike action next Saturday, June 4 to demand a pay rise from April 1, 2021.

The Communications Workers Union says the Post Office is offering nothing – zero per cent – for all the work by staff during the pandemic, which it says is is unacceptable to its members.

The move is the second day of strike action in Crown Post Offices following the successful action on May 3.

CWU representative Tim Pavelin said: “Post Office workers in Redditch were classed as key workers and kept the country running.

“Post Office senior managers are now saying these key workers are not worth a pay rise, and have not engaged in any negotiation with the CWU.

“Post Office workers, CWU members, have been left with no option other than to withdraw their labour to get a pay rise.”

The strike action will disrupt Post Office services during the Jubilee celebrations, and has been backed nationally by the CWU members on a 97.3 per cent yes vote on a turnout of more than 70 per cent of members.

“A good employer would have considered shutting on the Saturday of the Jubilee celebrations, to allow their staff to commemorate the event,” said Mr Pavelin.

“This shows an employer totally out of touch with its workforce, and a Post Office in crisis.”

He said the CWU remains committed to talks with Post Office Ltd, and hopes the announcement of strike action will resonate with the Post Office to start negotiations to end the deadlock for 2021 pay.
