Stroke survivor stepping out to help others

A STROKE survivor is pushing himself against the odds to raise money to help other stroke victims.

Chris O’Brien suffered a stroke at the age of just 32 in October this year and he is now trying desperately to recover from the damage it did.

However, the blow, which has affected his sight and speech as well as causing memory problems and severe fatigue, has not dented his positive attitude.

Just two months after the illness struck, determined dad Chris has decided to do something practical as he strives for recovery and is taking part in a charity walk for the Stroke Association.

He said: “I am only 32, which is considered quite young to have a stroke, but the doctors think the stroke may be hereditary as my dad suffered a devastating stroke aged 42 which left him in a wheelchair.

“Typical me, I like to look on the bright side and always try and turn a negative into a positive – so I decided to take on a challenge.”

Due to his condition, Chris can only do a five kilometre challenge – and will have take it at a slow run or walking pace, but he hopes to raise at least £200 pounds for the cause.

In the lead-up to the event, Chris is walking a lot more with his loyal dog and plans to gradually build up more strength and stamina.

He is now under the care of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, and they have been supporting his endeavours and rehabilitation.

Chris’ 15-year-old son, Lennon is also taking part in a run, supporting his dad and doing a 15K to boost the funds for Stroke Association which is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to conquering stroke.

“People have said that they are amazed to see me back at work so quickly,” said Chris, a funeral director for Hemming and Peace in Alcester.

“But for me, it’s not something I’m going to let hold me back,” added Chris. “It’s about attitude and it’s not going to let it beat me.

“Bad things happen but it’s how we react that makes the difference to the future.

“I hope I can inspire other young people who suffer a brain haemorrhage or stroke to pick themselves up and not let it defeat them.”

The run is taking place on February 25 at Arrow Valley Park and anyone interested in sponsoring Chris with his challenge can get in touch via http://www.justgiving.com/Chris-O-Brien12
