BUDDING scientists at at Alcester Academy shone when they tackled ‘Project SOS’ at King’s High School in Warwick last Wednesday.

It saw 15 Year 11s arriving at King’s High Warwick to take part in a high level schools competition.

All the teams had a brief to write a scientific report and collect and analyse data around a hypothetical question of their choice based on ‘stereotypes’.

Themes ranged from the justice system to gender issues in high school sport.

Alcester Academy’s four teams two of boys, two of girls – competed against other pupils from Kings’ High and Warwick School – both private schools- and were judged by representatives of the physics department of Oxford University.

There were 13 teams in total.

Out of three categories, Alcester Academy was runner up in two and actually won the third, a massive achievement for the school.

Assistant headteacher at Alcester Academy Nick Cooke said: “We are delighted that our students delivered such slick and clear work in such an environment, and to win the research poster element and receive highly commended awards for both the presentation and project was a truly impressive and moving experience.

“The evening was palpable confirmation of how resilient, hard-working and adaptable Alcester Academy students can be! And proof that there really is no limit to what can achieved.”

Their winning research poster team’s theme was a careful consideration of the question: ‘How do stereotypes around gender affect aspirations around life goals in British teenagers?’

The students received fulsome praise for their teamwork, quality of poster, ability to discuss their project at length and impressive data set.
