Studley Parish council back bank car park plan

Redditch Editorial 23rd Mar, 2017   0

A CALL to turn the former Lloyds Bank car park in Studley into a community parking area has been backed by the parish council.

The suggestion came from district councillor Hazel Wright (Lib Dem, Studley & Sambourne), who said the scheme would not only get rid of one of the derelict sites that plague the village but also help solve some of its parking problems.

And, she added, the local authority, Stratford District Council, had plenty of money in reserve to pay for the scheme.

“We have the capital revenue available at Stratford. They’ve got £7.5million available and they underspend every year which is most unusual for any council these days,” she said.

“Then there is the local enterprise partnership (Coventry & Warwickshire) which might be able to help too.”

Coun Wright estimated the cost of making good the car park would be £150,000 plus £5,000 in legal fees.

“When you look at the rating contribution to Stratford District Council from this village this is not a lot of money.

“Really and truly, we have derelict sites everywhere and they are unattractive and give a bad impression not just of Studley but also Stratford district. What we do not want is for it to be kicked into the long grass like the Co-op supermarket site.”

Parish chairman Coun Paul Beaman agreed that making good the car park, which is also owned by the Co-op, would bring considerable benefits to the village.

“I propose that we support this on confirmation of the figures and we will get a letter off to Chris Saint (leader, Stratford District Council) in the hope we get an agreement on this as soon as possible.”

The proposal was carried unanimously.
