DON’T let hay fever stop sufferers getting outdoors this summer, say Redditch doctors.

Although hay fever is the most common seasonal allergy, affecting one in five of us at some point in your life, local medics say it can be treated, writes Lauren Beddow.

The say there are steps people can take to prevent those allergies becoming too severe.

There is of course medication but other methods such as applying a petroleum jelly like Vaseline below the nostrils can help trap pollen grains, while wearing wraparound sunglasses stops pollen getting in your eyes.

Dr Richard Davies chair of Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Although there is no cure for hay fever, there are many over-the-counter medicines from your local pharmacy to help make life and the condition easier to manage.

“Pharmacists are fully trained health professionals who can offer useful advice on treatments for hay fever.”

Doctors also recommend sufferers take a shower and change their clothes after being outdoors, and try to stay indoors when the pollen count is particularly high.

If a prescription is needed, see your local GP.
