HEALTH chiefs are urging vulnerable residents to take extra care to avoid catching norovirus – the winter vomiting disease.
Those with long-term health conditions, the elderly or the very young are at risk of experiencing an even higher impact of the ‘bug’ which is already extremely unpleasant for the healthiest of people.
Dr Richard Davies, interim chair and clinical lead at NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “When people have norovirus they usually make a full recovery within one or two days, but this is not the case for everyone.
“Public places like hospitals, schools and offices, are susceptible to outbreaks and people should stay at home until they are free of the symptoms – as it’s a virus, it cannot be treated with antibiotics.”
He advises anyone who has contracted the virus to stay home until 48 hours after symptoms have passed, to wash their hands frequently, stay clear of doctors and hospitals and to wash any clothes or bedding which may have got contaminated.
