Talented coffee artist raises £300 for Redditch Royal British Legion

A 47-year-old man has raised £300 for Redditch Royal British Legion after two of his coffee paintings sold at a charity auction.

Wayne Wright was delighted when his paintings, one of a World War Two Spitfire and the other of British soldiers in the trenches, were auctioned at Redditch Rugby Club.

The talented artist paints different shapes, faces and iconic images using only cold coffee, a brush and a canvas.

Having not picked up a paintbrush in 30 years, Wayne was challenged by his teenage daughter to give it another go.

“I painted at school but I didn’t carry on with it because I didn’t get the grades I needed,” said Wayne.

“It was only when my daughter, who was studying GCSE Art at the time, asked me to help out that I decided to do something again.”

His first idea was to paint with black tea because he didn’t have much art material in his house.

It failed miserably and so did using gravy granules.

“Coffee was the next choice of medium and that worked,” said Wayne.

“My first piece was influenced by my Birmingham upbringing – Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders.”

Wayne started painting for friends and family but it wasn’t until he noticed his followers on social media growing that he realised he had something special.

“After posting my pictures online I received hundreds of messages, good wishes and requests from all over the world.

“From Dudley to Dallas.”

Even with the huge interest, Wayne has continued to donate his work to several groups and charities for auction.

His work can be seen in galleries around West Midlands including Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
