Teacher goes plastic free and raises vital sums for to battle cancer

A TEACHER from Redditch has completed an entire month plastic-free to help raise money for Cancer Research.

Holly Appleby, from St Bede’s Catholic Middle School, decided to attempt the experiment after seeing some of the negative effects plastic-waste can have on the environment and people’s health.

She said: “I wanted to make people aware of the issues we face and what better way to do it than to raise money at the same time. In supermarkets it’s shocking how nearly everything is covered in plastic and to a certain degree I had to change what I ate.”

Holly started by arranging for milk to be delivered in glass bottles, which could be recycled, buying reusable material bags and getting loose fruit and veg from farm shops.

She found getting hold of non-plastic toiletries the most difficult and had to buy them from smaller eco-friendly companies online.

“Overall I have loved this experience and I will definitely be more conscious about my plastic use and I will continue to look for alternative where I can,” she said.

A total of £460 was raised throughout the month.
