REDDITCH residents have reported received phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be police officers from London.
They are attempting to persuade people to make bank transfers or withdrawals using several different fake reasons, including there being a fraud attempt on their account and bank cards.
Sergeant Craig Osborne from Redditch Police said: “No police officer from any force or department will ever ask you to make a payment, withdraw or transfer money or ask for your bank account details.
“These scams can be very elaborate and convincing but it’s extremely cruel and often they target older, more vulnerable people.
“We are asking that the public let elderly family, friends and neighbours know and what to look out for.
“Please tell them that if they receive a call like this that they are to hang up; do not disclose any personal information or banking details as the caller will not be from the police, regardless of how convincing they are.”
Sgt Osborne asks if anyone who has received suspect calls to get in touch.
“Please remember the police will never contact you asking for your bank card or cash. If someone does, it’s a scam – provide no details, hang up and report it immediately to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040″
If you have recently provided bank details or handed over cards or cash, or the caller has arranged for someone to visit your address to collect items, you should call the police to report this on 101.
Always dial 999 in an emergency.
