Tenants urged: Plug into safety and let council contractors in

Redditch Editorial 18th May, 2021   0

TENANTS in Redditch are being urged to let Covid-safe contractors into their homes so they can carry out essential – and potentially life saving – work.

According to figures from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) more than half of accidental fires start with electrical appliances.

Recently the borough council and its contractors Orton Group have reported an increase in tenants not answering the door to experts who need access to carry out electrical safety checks.

Portfolio holder for housing at the authority, Councillor Craig Warhurst, said: “Not only are these inspections a legal requirement, they could save lives.

“And while we understand there are concerns about letting people into your homes during the pandemic, we can assure you all safety measures will be taken including full PPE being worn and the inspection taking place in a different room to people living there, with windows open.”

When inspections are due tenants will receive letters to make appointments at a convenient time for them, but are being reminded to keep to the time and when the contractor arrives, to let them in.

Tenants are also reminded that no-one from the council or its contractors will call at your property or carry out works without an appointment or identification.

Orton Group supervisor Lee Jackson said: “Letting in our contractors for a few minutes is better than a house fire happening because we couldn’t make sure the electrics and gas appliances were safe.

“Please let us do our jobs and protect tenants and their homes.”

In addition to the inspection from the Council’s contractors, HWFRS also suggests the following safety measures:

Don’t overload plug sockets

Regularly check for worn or frayed wires

Unplug appliances when not in use

Keep appliances clean and in good working order

Always plug major appliances, like refrigerators, washers and dryers directly into a wall outlet.
