SPRING is on its way and the annual Snowdrop Weekend at St Leonard’s Church in Beoley will once again be showcasing the beautiful blooms in its grounds this month.
It takes place this weekend (February 12-13) and the 11th century church will also be opening its doors to visitors with a range of displays from both church and local organisations.
In addition there will be a special area for children with a selection of craft activities and quizzes to enjoy.
This year there will be a display by Worcestershire Archaeological Society following their explorations in Beoley in recent months. It follows the digging of 13 test pits in Beoley last year, one of which was in the grounds of the vicarage adjacent to St Leonard’s.
Each test pit was a simple one metre square that explored the ground below hoping to find any remains that had been deposited by previous generations in and around the village.
The exercise is part of a larger project, ‘Small Pits Big Ideas’, funded by the National Lottery, and the plan is to work with six villages in the Worcestershire, Beoley being the first.
As part of the Snowdrop Weekend, Worcestershire Archaeological Society is putting together a display of the work carried out, together with various examples of their findings and there will be specialists from the team present to answer questions about the whole experience.
Teas, coffees, cakes and biscuits will be available for visitors, with hot soup and rolls served over lunchtime.
The church will be open from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday 1pm to 4pm.
