The art of shopping

Redditch Editorial 1st May, 2014 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

A TEMPORARY art gallery is being set-up in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre to showcase the talent on offer in Redditch.

The Arts in Redditch Network has joined forces with the centre and Redditch Borough Council to create a pop-up gallery in an empty unit on Walford Walk opposite Clinton’s card shop.

Work on display will range from painting to ceramics, while there will also be live demonstrations from a range of professional and amateur artists. Shoppers will also be able to buy the pieces on show with ten per cent of profits going back into promoting the arts in Redditch.

The gallery will be open between Saturday and Sunday, May 10 to 19 between 10am and 4pm during the week and longer at weekends.

The project is being backed by a grant from the council’s Stronger Communities Fund and also forms part of Redditch Town Centre Partnership’s 50 in 50 Challenge, to put on 50 things to see and do to mark Redditch’s 50th anniversary of new town designation.

Phil Roberts, from Arts in Redditch, said: “We’re delighted to be able to create this opportunity for people to connect with local artists. We’d like to emphasise again this is for artists of all stripes from amateur to professional. Why not pop in and see what Redditch is creating?”

Painter Helen Rogers, who will be displaying her work in the gallery, said: “It’ll be fantastic to have a gallery in Redditch. I love to paint and I’ve been doing it since I was old enough to hold a paintbrush, and for a local artist like me to be able to show and sell the things I make is really important.”
