REDDITCH Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club (AFVBC) held a special family funday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The event on Saturday, June 1 at Redditch Hockey and Rugby Club, featured a multitude of activities for all ages.

Among the attractions were military vehicles, de-activated military weapons, a re-enactment stall, large steam traction engine, the Army Reserves, the Army Cadets, West Mercia Police, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and a chainsaw carver.

For children, there was a free bouncy castle and slides and rides whilst for the adults there was an outdoor bar.

Nick Walker, from Redditch AFVBC, said: “We had over 4,000 people turn up who by all accounts loved the day.

“All the show pieces, entertainment and vendors were fantastic.

“To the guys that helped run this show with us, pat yourselves on the back, we did well.

“It was a privilege to have the Mayor Coun Juma Begum visit us.

“Myself and James Shotbolt even also had time for a reunion with old army mates from over 30 years ago which was emotional.

“A great day made better with great people, celebrating a momentous event.”

Simon Hobson, a fellow member of the club said:

“As a person that has lived in Redditch his entire life it was an absolute pleasure to be able to be part of the organisers team of veterans and put on an event for the entire Redditch community.

“More needs to be done for Redditch Armed Forces and veterans Breakfast Club.

“They solely rely on donations and unless we have the support needed we can not support veterans and their families.”
