THOSE in Redditch suffering from colds may be interested to find out the virus can be passed on via your eyes,
The latest information from NHS England contained a surprising revelation is that you can actually catch a cold through your eyes. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they release tiny droplets into the air. If these droplets get on to your hands, you can pass them into your eyes by touching them.
The best way to avoid this is to ensure you have good hygiene, plenty of hand washing and surface sanitizing will give you the best chance to avoid the germs getting into your system. Especially as they can live for up to two days outside of the body.
It has also been revealed that Vitamin C may not be the magic formula after all to keep colds at bay. There are plenty of good reasons to eat the vitamin which is found in foods like oranges and broccoli. However, there is currently little evidence to suggest that ingesting this vitamin reduces your chances of getting a cold.
This doesn’t mean you don’t have to eat your fruit and vegetables though, as they still contribute to a stronger overall immune system.
Also, despite extensive research that continues to go into tackling the common cold, there are around 200 types of virus that cause the illness, which makes it highly unlikely there will be a definitive cure anytime soon.
If and when you are unfortunate enough to be struck down by a cold however, please try and avoid older people and children who can be worse effected and make sure you go visit your pharmacist.
Despite many home made remedies created to tackle the cold, Kiran Patel, Medical Director, NHS England (West Midlands) advises that you stick to over the counter medications readily available at the pharmacy. He said: ”Your first point of call should be your local pharmacist.
”Use the medicines they provide, such as painkillers, decongestants and cold medicines to self-treat at home. They will also be able to advise you which medications are suitable for children.”
