REDDITCH Town centre has taken a major step forward with the completion of improvement works to Unicorn Hill and Church Green West.
The transformation aimed to upgrade one of the towns key gateways for residents and shoppers.
The footways have been resurfaced and new seating installed along with upgraded bins and cycle parking that aim to make the area cleaner, safer and more user-friendly.
Cycle lanes have also been widened and a contrasting green surface has been created to improve both safety and accessibility.
Speed cushions have been installed to further enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists by helping to reduce vehicle speeds.
New loading and disabled parking bays have been introduced on Unicorn Hill to make access more convenient, and the top section of the existing taxi rank has been redesigned to provide limited waiting bays during the daytime.
These changes hope to offer greater flexibility for visitors, helping to support local businesses and improve the flow of traffic in the town centre.
Outdated and unnecessary street furniture, including redundant signs, has been removed.
Councillor Karl Perks, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “This project has completely refreshed Unicorn Hill and Church Green West, creating a more attractive and welcoming space for residents, visitors and local businesses.
“Together, these changes will support local businesses, drive economic growth and help the town centre continue to thrive.
“It’s fantastic to see the momentum of earlier projects in Alcester Street and Market Place continue here. The end result is a modern, vibrant and practical space that the whole community can benefit from.
“We know that improvement works of this scale inevitably cause some short-term disruption, but we’d like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience. The finished scheme speaks for itself – this is a real investment in Redditch’s future.”
Leader of Redditch Borough Council, Councillor Sharon Harvey, whose portfolio covers Regeneration added: “I am delighted that these works have finally been completed, and our town centre is now even more accessible to residents and visitors alike.
“It’s a great example of partnership working and that once again, we have taken our residents’ needs and feedback on board to deliver a fantastic solution which will benefit them and of course our businesses.”
