Training centre in Redditch honours spring maker Michael

IT will be a proud and poignant occasion for the Bunegar family today (Friday) when an engineering training centre is opened named in memory of well-known spring maker Michael Bunegar.

The academy, at the Rubicon Business Centre in Lakeside and featuring the very latest technology, will offer young people an opportunity to train in an industry which, together with needle making, made the town great.

Michael’s daughter Jemma-Dee said: “It’s obviously very difficult for us but we are also extremely proud that Dad is going to be remembered in this way.

“My Dad lived in Redditch his whole life and was extremely proud to say so and this is such a great legacy for him and brilliant for the young people of this town.”

Born in Hunt End and brought up in Batchley, Michael spent 40 years in the spring industry and even travelled the world as a representative for it.

He worked for Wafios-Metoma Ltd on Moons Moat, but sadly passed away aged 56 just six months after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2014.

He left behind a wife, Michele, two daughters, Jemma-Dee and Natalie, and his adored grandchildren.

“It was a massive shock to all his family and we are still struggling to come to terms with the huge loss in our lives,” said Jemma-Dee.

“He said he would never retire and that is why his family are so proud that his legacy will live on in the new Michael Bunegar training centre. This is truly a great honour.”

The centre is backed by industry suppliers Wire & Tube Technology, based at the Rubicon Centre, with the aim of training the spring makers of the future, something, said Jemma-Dee, that her Dad would have been proud of.
