TRAVELLERS have set up an illegal encampment on Redditch’s Birchfield Road play park.
It is believed they are the group who were camped at Bromsgrove’s Sanders Park.
On that occasion, police say they broke a lock on a barrier to gain access to the site. That meant officers were able to issue them with a Section 60 Criminal Justice and Public Order notice, as amended by the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.
But when they arrived in Redditch, police say a gate was left open which meant those powers were unavailable to officers and it would be down to landowners – Redditch Borough Council – to move them on.
A council representative said: “Whilst there is some dispute over whether the site was in fact locked, as per the usual procedure for cases involving council owned land officers have today been out and issued a 48-hour notice to vacate as the first step of the formal legal process.”
