HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to much-loved Alcester town councillor Lennox Cumberbatch, who passed away this week following a long fight with cancer.

Coun Cumberbatch, who became the first councillor this century to serve two consecutive terms as Alcester’s mayor, died on Friday (December 30) after losing his battle against the disease.

Coun Cumberbatch, aged 76, did a huge amount of work for the town and was a member of the Community Care committee as well as chairman of both the council-led Alcester Community Trust committee and Alcester Shadow Health and Wellbeing Board.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana and having previously lived in Wales and elsewhere in England, Lennox came to Alcester in 2001, and said of the town: “What I like most about Alcester is the good atmosphere, friendly people and pleasant surroundings.

“I joined Alcester Town Council to contribute towards the general development of the town and to work with others in the improvement of the health and social care of the residents of Alcester.”

The retired health care manager and senior local government officer was also involved in Court Leet activities and was High Bailiff in 2008.

Throughout his illness, the dedicated Alcester resident continued to work hard for the town, fund-raising for other cancer patients and the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital with regular quiz nights and civic receptions.

Following news of his death, hundreds of people took to Facebook to pay their respects to the popular councillor, with many describing him as ‘lovely’, ‘wonderfully kind’ and a “gentleman”.

The Manchester United football fan, who also enjoyed golf, is survived by his wife Kath and his two children, David and Suzanne.
