Tuck in! Church Hill Big Local just digs new garden initiative in Redditch

THE edible garden movement has come marching into Redditch with a little help from community action group Church Hill Big Local.

Last weekend volunteers were out in force refreshing the flower planters and putting in plants that not only look good – but taste good too.

They were joined by local councillors Bill Hartnett, Pat Witherspoon and Nine Wood-Ford plus an army of litter pickers from the drive-in McDonalds on Moons Moat.

“I’m biased but it looks absolutely brilliant,” said Ian Johnson of Church Hill Big Local.

“We’ve put in loads of berries, gooseberries, raspberries, even goji berries and we’re waiting for the blackberries to go in later,” he added.

“Thank you to everyone who took part and who helped.”

Also on the list were rhubarb and some mint and it will all be available for local to pick, eat and enjoy when it matures and ripens.

The edible garden idea was the brainchild of Stephen Betteridge, Big Local’s chair of Open Spaces, and catches the current movement for a garden that’s useful as well as beautiful.

Residents of Church Hill can now keep their fingers crossed for a bountiful harvest this time next year.
