A LORRY driver was seriously injured and had to be cut from the wreckage of his cab after a crash involving two HGVs on the M5.
One of the vehicles went down an embankment and overturned following the collision at 5am yesterday near Junction 5 (Droitwich).
After being carefully cut free from the vehicle by the fire service’s technical rescue team the driver received advanced trauma care at the scene to stabilise his condition and treatment for injuries sustained to his head, body, arms and leg.
The man, who is in his 40s, was then given pain relief before being immobilised and taken to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The doctor travelled in the ambulance to continue treatment en route.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said two ambulances, two paramedic officers, the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.
The whole carriageway between Junction 5 and Junction 4a (Bromsgrove) was shut for several hours with two lanes re-opening around 10am.
The second lorry driver, who was out of his vehicle before the emergency services got there, was described by paramedics as ‘walking wounded’ and, as he had sustained minor injuries, was taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital as a precautionary measure.
The congestion spanned at one point all the way back to Junction 6 (Worcester).
The carriageway between Junction 6 and Junction 5 was also closed in the morning because of a broken down lorry, adding to the rush hour chaos.
