Uke can do it - sprightly John Davies in the running for seniors award

AN Alvechurch man has reached the final of McCarthy and Stone’s search for the Inspirational Generation – a nationwide competition to find and reward those over 60 with an inspiring story to tell.

John Davies, aged 70, has seen off stiff opposition from across the West Midlands and has been shortlisted as a regional finalist along with two others from Solihull and Wolverhampton for their amazing feats and achievements.

When John retired, he decided to learn a new instrument and took up the ukulele.

He then formed a band with four other retirees called ‘The 6-5 Specials’, who perform across the Midlands raising money for charities including British Lung Foundation, Children in Need and Alzheimer’s Research. So far, they have collected more than £5,000.

The Inspirational Gen-eration competition was launched by retirement home builder McCarthy and Stone to put the spotlight on the nation’s baby boomers, and to celebrate the many ways older people inspire the younger generation.

“I decided to enter the search for the Inspirational Generation because the group I started a few years ago, ‘The 6-5 Specials’, has raised thousands of pounds for various charities,” said John.

“I think it’s important we recognise the achievements of older people because even when you’re my age you can still make an impact and help make a difference to other lives.”
