Vintage tea party in Redditch helps to celebrate town milestone

A SPECIAL vintage tea party to showcase a handmade wall hanging celebrating 100 years of Redditch history and art has been hailed a success.

On October 28, guests were invited to the vintage tea at St Luke’s Memorial Hall (The Bridge) to see the progress of the ‘Redditch Remembered in Thread’ wall hanging.

‘Remembered in Thread’ is a project set up in 2014 to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War and the 50th Anniversary of Redditch New Town.

A community group was formed, Redditch Recorded Through Arts, to create a wall hanging showing the past 100 years and the changes that have happened over the years.

With the River Arrow running through the centre joining the old town with the new, the wall hanging includes history, events and places captured in embroidered memory bubbles.

Organiser Sue Yeng said: “The tea party was beyond our wildest dreams – the whole room was packed and the event was a real success.”

There was also a raffle to win a quilt in aid of Cancer Research, plus stalls and displays in the newly renovated hall, raising £500 for the cause in memory of Joan Edinburgh, who died recently and was involved with project from the start, teaching and sharing skills.

Brenda Killigrew, from Inkberrow Design Centre in Britten Street, won the raffle, and as an experience and skilled seamstress, she appreciated the many hours of work that went into her prize.

‘Remembered in thread’ is a work in progress and anyone who has sewing or embroidery skills – no matter what level – is encouraged to get in touch and take part. Contact Sue Tatlow at Redditch Recorded Through Art Group on Facebook to find out more.
