War writer returns to his roots

A WORCESTERSHIRE author will be returning to his roots by talking to readers at Alvechurch library.

Steve R Dunn will be visiting the library from 11am tomorrow (Saturday) to talk about his second book The Coward? The Rise and Fall of the Silver King.

The specialist First World War writer will be commenting on the novel which is based three days after Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914.

The book explores Rear Admiral Ernest Troubridge – a rising star of the British Navy – who made a decision that seemed inexplicable at the time and would dominate the rest of his life and naval career.

When commanding the 1st Cruiser Squadron, which was heading towards the German battle cruiser Goeben in the Mediterranean, he signalled to engage the German ship.

But Troubridge suddenly changed his mind, turned his vessels away, and allowed the enemy ship to escape.

Mr Dunn, who is from Barnt Green, said he was delighted to be visiting the library as part of extended World Book Day celebrations.

He added the event would be especially fitting as Troubridge’s actions contributed to the disastrous campaign at Gallipoli, the 100th anniversary of which is commemorated on April 25.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for localism and communities added: “Author visits are always really good.

“Meeting an author face to face and hearing their take on their book can add so much to your experience of the book whether it comes before or after you have read the book.”

Copies of Mr Dunn’s book are available to borrow from the library and for information on the event call 01905 822722.
