Warning to drivers after Redditch car-key burglary

Redditch Editorial 16th Apr, 2023   0

DRIVERS have been warned to be on their guard after a car-key burglary in Redditch.

A property was broken into and then took the keys before making off with the vehicle.

Redditch Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said: “Perpetrators of this crime often ‘work to order’ and will target specific vehicles, based on demand and value.

“If a criminal is targeting a certain vehicle they will also be targeting the owner, looking for easy ways to exploit their security and get to their keys.

“The most common methods used by thieves are to follow victims’ home or ‘cruise’ around residential areas looking for opportunities.”

The force urges people who think they are being followed or see any suspicious vehicles in their area to record the make, model and registration number and report it by calling 101.

Crime prevention advice

People can reduce their chances of becoming a car-key burglary victim by following several steps.

Keys should always be kept somewhere safe and out of sight. Vehicles should be locked in a garage if possible and high quality alarms or security systems, including immobilisers and steering locks, should also be used.

Drivers should always take their keys with them when leaving the vehicle unattended, always keep keys safe and concealed in public places and make sure doors, windows, the boot and sunroof are secure whenever the vehicle is left.

Owners of more than one vehicle should park the lesser-value vehicle behind the more expensive one to block it in and prevent it from being driven away easily.

Motorists with keyless cars should always keep their fob in a Faraday pouch or box or a metal tin so would-be thieves cannot capture the signal.

When it comes to properties, people should always ensure doors and windows are securely locked and a high quality burglar alarm is installed.

If a burglary or other crime is in progress, always call 999.
