Water is constantly pouring from a manhole cover despite water shortages

WATER has been pouring from a manhole cover on Unicorn Hill for months – despite Severn Trent urging people to conserve water.

The leak, just outside Shahi Palace restaurant, near Redditch train station, has been constantly flowing to the consternation of passersby.

Regional water company Severn Trent have confirmed it is their responsibility for the maintenance of the street’s underground water system at that point.

Ronald Rowland, a resident from Crabbs Cross, said: “I have to walk down that street all the time and water’s pouring out everywhere.

“With the recent news about water shortages it seems bizarre to be so wasteful.

“I contacted Severn Trent about the issue months ago but nothing has been done yet.”

Dean Watts, from Worcestershire Highways, said: “It’s not acceptable that this has been going on for as long as it has.

“We will be working with Severn Trent to get the issue resolved as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “We’re really sorry for the delay in getting the leak fixed on Unicorn Hill in Redditch.

“The leak itself is located in a really tricky position so we’ll need to carry out repairs during off-peak hours when the road will be quieter to minimise disruption.

“Once the repair is under way our engineers will work as quickly as they can to get everything returned to normal.

“Again, we’d like to apologise for the delay.”
