'We need action on lorries' calls Redditch county councillor

LORRIES parked on residential roads in Webheath have led to a Redditch county councillor calling on the borough council to hand over traffic enforcement issues to another authority.

Coun Brandon Clayton (Con, Redditch North) said the borough’s own enforcement officers had ‘done nothing’ to deter lorries which he says are parked up waiting to get on the site of the Church Road housing development.

This doesn’t open daily until 9.15am which he said has led to large vehicles arriving early and waiting on residential roads for the appointed hour.

“They can be waiting any time from 8.15am which is ridiculous and to make the situation worse some are parked on double yellow lines,” said Coun Clayton.

“There is no enforcement action by the borough council against these companies which are not fulfilling their obligations. I don’t know if it’s the capacity of officers or the willingness of officers but I think we should hand over enforcement to an authority which will take action, like Wychavon which currently handles our car parking infringements.”

The leader of Redditch Borough Council, Coun Bill Hartnett (Lab, Church Hill), said Coun Clayton had already received a full explanation of the situation at the authority’s last full council meeting.

“We have taken the advice of the Government on this and it says dialogue is the best route in dealing with situations like this,” he said.

“Personally I drive past Webheath each day and although I don’t pass Church Road I do see lorries parked in the lay-bys along the highway.

“If there is an issue Coun Clayton should report it to the officers but as it is we are following the advice laid down by the Government.”
