Diary of Karen Lumley, MP for Redditch – 26 February 2016
ALL the chatter and excitement in the corridors and offices of Westminster this week has been about ‘should we stay or should we go?’. It is true to say that this once in a lifetime referendum has dominated the news and we’ll no doubt hear all the arguments on both sides over the next few weeks to enable you to make an informed decision.
I of course have made my position very clear. I have studied the proposals very closely and have come to the decision that I will be voting to leave the EU on the June 23.
I really do believe we can protect Britain’s interests better by once again being a sovereign country with our own laws being made here in Parliament in the interests of the British people. I believe this means that once again we will be in charge of our own destiny.
I am of course only one voter among thousands in Redditch. There are many different opinions here in Parliament and indeed among my friends and colleagues. It is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make as an MP, but I believe it is the right one.
I wouldn’t want you to think this was the only business Parliament was involved in this week. On Tuesday alone the House met for Foreign and Commonwealth Questions, and then considered Lords amendments to the Welfare Reform and Work Bill as well as to the Education and Adoption Bill. There was then a debate on Gangs and Serious Youth Violence.
