Don't people care? Witnesses to Oakenshaw vandalism urged to come forward

Redditch Editorial 15th Dec, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

AN appeal has gone out for witnesses to come forward after significant damage was caused to a bus stop in Oakenshaw.

The bus stop on Coldfield Drive, which is owned by the council, was damaged at some point on Friday (December 4) and was left in such a dangerous state for both pedestrians and passing traffic that council officers had to remove it completely.

A furious passerby who reported the incident to the council and police said: “What on earth are the people of Oakenshaw like? Someone must have seen this, someone must have done it yet the council knew nothing about it when I reported the damage at 4.10pm.

“Don’t these people care about their neighbourhood?

“It had taken some considerable time and force to cause this damage – people are going around causing all this vandalism and no one has bothered to report it.”

Council officers are working with the police and any witnesses who may have seen something are urged to come forward.

Councillor Yvonne Smith, whose portfolio covers Community Safety, said: “It is such a shame that a few people in our town find it funny to commit such anti-social, selfish acts of vandalism which could have caused serious harm.

“Thank you to the resident who reported the situation to us and for the quick work of the officers – particularly as a lot more damage could have been caused with the strong winds. If you noticed anything unusual, even in passing, please let us know.”

If you have any information regarding this incident please call West Mercia Police on 101 or to give information anonymously please call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org .
