Worcestershire medical school supports Redditch MP's campaign to return Alex services

THE NEW medical school in Worcestershire will ‘help in our fight to return a maternity and children’s service to the Alex’, according to Rachel Maclean MP following its official opening.

The state-of-the-art school, which welcomed its first cohort of students last September, was officially opened last Thursday at the University of Worcester by the Duke of Gloucester.

Working alongside her Worcestershire MP colleagues, Mrs Maclean backed the creation of a medical school in Worcestershire and lobbied Ministers about the need for doctors to be trained in the county.

Last October, the Government announced it would fund new places for the medical school to train the next generation of NHS doctors from September this year.

Training doctors locally forms a major part of Mrs Maclean’s plan to return a maternity and children’s service to the Alexandra Hospital as set out in her Long Term Plan for the Delivery of Health and Social Care.

Mrs Maclean said: “There are now more doctors and nurses working for our Acute Trust than when I was first elected, and the opening of the Three Counties Medical School will ensure the NHS is set for the future and my constituents get the care they need when they need it.”

She added she believed this – and the plan to train doctors locally – would help in the fight to return a maternity and children’s service to the Alex.

“I will leave no stone unturned in the fight to return these vital services,” she added.
