DURING the May half term YMCA Worcestershire in partnership with Redditch Borough Council, Bromsgrove District Council and Oakland International has delivered 120 food parcels to local families in north Worcestershire – with little help from big-hearted supermarket Morrisons.
The initiative has been delivered in place of Active Kitchen, a session that usually provides children aged nine to 16 a place to go, physical activity and lunch during school holidays.
Although some children can access free school meals during term time, Active Kitchens is designed to tackle ‘holiday hunger’.
The YMCA team joined with Morrisons Redditch who prepared the packages of goodies and also donated free books for the children.
Lisa Carroll head of children, families and youth said: “It’s great that teams from across YMCA Worcestershire’s youth programmes have been able to collaborate to support children and families in the local community especially during these times when the need is greater than ever.
“We have received really positive feedback from families that have welcomed the food packages.
“This is a great example of community partnership and one we were very happy to participate in. ”
The local YMCAs are a Christian charity with bases in Worcester, Redditch, Malvern, Upton Upon Severn, Bromsgrove and Droitwich providing 241 accommodation units within the county.
