Your Letters: e-scooters, trees, and maybe a wasted opportunity

Redditch Editorial 1st Aug, 2021   0

THE day after a cyclist died in Alcester, I was hit my a motorist while out cycling with my nine year old son.

It happened in Hunt End.

Miraculously I’m all in one piece. Bruised, sprained and cut. In pain but alive and kicking!

I’m hoping that you will be able to write something in the paper to remind drivers to pay attention on the roads.

There was nothing I could have done to prevent the accident.

I had eye contact with the driver but she just wasn’t focusing on driving.

I was out cycling with my 9 year old son and if he had been cycling first as he wanted he would have been hit and the outcome would have been very different.

As it was she hit me, then he hit me as he tried to serve and we landed in an entangled mess.

I have had difficulty sleeping because of the pain from the accident.

The police are now involved with the incident.

ON page 13 of the edition of the Redditch Standard newspaper published on Friday, April 30, 2021 there are two statements which I, together with colleagues, kindly request further information.

1. Investing in our trees, parks, and open spaces …

“What’s more we are tackling Ash Die Back by removing diseased trees and taking the opportunity at the same time to re-plant with new and more diverse species of trees to improve overall biodiversity.”

2. Regenerating our town centre …

“We asked the Redditch public what they thought of this vision and over 78 per cent of respondents supported the overall regeneration ambitions, with 66 per cent of respondents also supporting the creation of a new public square.”

The requests:

1. Trees:

(a) Since January 1, 2019 how many diseased ash trees have been removed by Redditch Borough Council?

(b) Please provide full details including species, numbers, locations, and dates etc. where all the new and more diverse species have been planted.

2. Town centre:

(a) How many people (the actual number) does this 78 per cent represent?

(b) How many (the actual number) does this 66 per cent represent – those supporting the creation of a new public square?

The response from the council was: The information you requested is not held. The article you refer to is a Conservative Party Manifesto and they carried out their own consultation.

So now I put the questions to Councillor Matt Dormer, the leader of our Conservative controlled Council.

Let us see if he is able to provide accurate answers.

REGARDING e-scooters (Letters) how difficult would it be to make it law that they must emit a certain decibel level so people know when they are coming up behind them?

Secondly one of my concerns are the numbers of children riding on them (the rental ones) often two at a time on roads.

What kind of idiotic adults would allow children to do this especially after all the publicity regarding adults being killed using them.

I can understand the thrill children get out of it but they are deadly.

J Martin, Redditch

REGARDING e-scooters I must say I find myself agreeing with our MP Mrs Maclean; namely that this is a trial and only after all the evidence has been evaluated can the government make an informed decision on whether or not to permanently introduce the scooters.

It seems an eminently sensible way to go about things.

No doubt the unfortunate fate of the four people you described in last week’s newspaper will be taken into account then.

T Jackson, Greenlands

I ATTENDED the protest about the loss of green space in Redditch at the Abbey Stadium on Monday.

While the sentiments and anger shown were all very worthy and the press seemed to lap it up, we singularly failed to engage with a single councillor.

It’s all very well shouting but what is needed is to sitting down and talk with these people rather than being aggressive.

That achieves nothing.

Who knows if we will get an another opportunity to put our point across in a measured and controlled manner?

I AM very worried by the planning application for the demolition of car park 7.

Can somebody please tell me what is happening at car park 7?

It was closed down just as the Covid lockdowns started.

This is a disaster for several patients trying to attend the very local health centres and chemists.

There were some hints that it had become unsafe, but I don’t believe that.

Several people used to find it very useful for times they had to attend the health centres around it.

The only other option being arriving in town on a bus, or parking in the multi storey car parks and walking through the Kingfisher centre.

Both options not good for anybody who is trying to self isolate.

People having to attend the health centres are usually not in the best of health, so are afraid of being surrounded by other people!

There is now an application to demolish the site! Does that mean we might get more housing without car parking space?

I strongly object to the demolition!
